Community Quilts from Sobrevivir: Phung Huynh

Filipino American Voices and Images from Southern CaliforniaArt photography by Ian Byers-Gamber

Welcome to the home page for Community Quilts, a digital initiative focused on art and reproductive justice organized by the Vincent Price Art Museum.

This digital initiative showcases three original quilts made by East Los Angeles College students and members of the public in dialogue with the 2022/2023 exhibition Phung Huynh: Sobrevivir at the Vincent Price Art Museum. The exhibition notably included a Community Quilt Lab within the gallery where visitors could create their own handmade quilt patch in response to the exhibition. More than 70 participants created their own quilt blocks over the course of the exhibition, including ELAC students from Fall 2022 Chicano Studies and Theater Arts courses. These quilts collectively bring together powerful community reflections on reproductive justice, emphasizing the importance of intergenerational dialogue and creative expression to support community healing.

We invite you to appreciate each of the handmade quilts using our menu located on the left side of the webpage.
