ABOUT THE JUROR

Portrait photograph of Gabriela Ruiz

Gabriela Ruiz (b. 1991, Los Angeles) is an artist and designer whose practice blends diverse forms of media and expression, including sculpture, video, performance, painting, installation, and apparel design. Ruiz often explores the Mexican American experience as well as themes of surveillance capitalism, mass consumerism, and the intersection of technology and emotion. Her work draws upon her strong DIY work ethic, vibrant cultural and artistic background, and early exposure to subculture and fantasy that has helped her escape the realities of daily life.

Ruiz has performed and exhibited internationally in art institutions, nightlife venues, and through public interventions. Her first solo museum exhibition was organized by the Vincent Price Art Museum in 2019. Additional solo exhibitions include the Little Tokyo Art Complex (2017), LaPau Gallery (2021), Anat Ebgi Gallery (2022), Palm Spring Art Museum (2022), and the Institute for the Humanities Gallery at the University of Michigan (2023). In recent years, Ruiz has also curated and organized several group exhibitions of emerging artists, including Elixir at Tlaloc Studios (2023); NEXUS for New Image Art (2023); and an Outburst Project with Karla Ekatherine Canseco, Maria Maea, Clara Nieblas, and Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya at the Palm Springs Art Museum (2022).

"[Through my experience at VPAM], I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of a space dedicated to showcasing art and fostering its growth. It's more than just a museum; it's a welcoming haven where creativity prospers and artists thrive. Serving as a juror for the student show is an honor, and I'm proud to be a part of it."
