HOY SPACE: Michael C. Hsiung

Who Cares Wins!
June 7 to July 26, 2014
Opening reception: Saturday, June 14, 4 to 6 pm

Michael C. Hsiung is a Los Angeles-based, self-taught artist and illustrator. Hsiung, who holds a B.A. in English (San Jose State University, 2000), relates his literary studies directly to his visual art practice. The sources of many of the artist’s ink drawings are Nordic folkloric myths and fairytales, stories that are given a decidedly contemporary spin. Hsiung mines his literary background, consults books on historic clothing styles, and produces wild, funky, and adventurous characters that are amalgamations of invented and real personalities.

Hsiung’s work captures the appeal of storytelling through portraiture and seriality; he has developed a recognizable range of “characters” such as mermen, surfer dudes, and psychedelic animals. The exhibition Who Cares Wins! is an installation of more than one-hundred ink drawings, paintings, and other related mixed-media works (2008-2014) that feature the artist’s signature graphic style, iconography, and wit.
