Corporeal Impulse is a group exhibition featuring five West Coast artists who work primarily with clay. The exhibition focuses on the implications between clay and the body as both a cognitive and intuitive process. As a physically involved medium, clay is capable of recording the artist’s presence and affecting the viewer through its materiality, its handmade nature creating an empathetic appeal. The works explore ceramics sculpturally, challenging the inherent limitations of clay whilst critically engaging with its decorative history. From simplistic to complex forms, Corporeal Impulse investigates the body in clay through various contexts such as gender, identity, biological systems, and temporality thus denying a simple linear understanding of ceramics and instead proving its potentiality as a timeless medium.
Participating artists: Julia Haft-Candell, Matt Merkel Hess, Jeffry Mitchell, Kathleen Ryan, Bari Ziperstein
