Overview
The 2008 Student Art Show marks a departure from previous years: this is the first juried show held at East Los Angeles College in – it is safe to say – many, many years. Our distinguished juror this year is Gronk, an internationally-recognized artist and an ELAC alumnus. We are very grateful to Gronk for carefully selecting the artwork included in this show from the many impressive pieces submitted by our talented students. Vincent Price Art Museum is very proud to host this exhibition of student work.
There is another new element: this show includes the disciplines of photography and architecture. As the boundaries between art disciplines have been breaking down over the last decades – just think of architects who are also designers; or, photographers who consider themselves artists first – the VPAM is incorporating these disciplines to see how they may relate and differ from what is referred to as the “fine arts.” It is hoped that through the “mixing” of media and disciplines, we may gain a broader view of art making at this college, and in this historical moment.
